Book Burning Memorial
The Monument for the burning of books is a
memorial in Bebel Platz, Berlin. It commemorates the burning of 20,000 books on
the 10th of May 1933, by NAZI members and supporters. Bands played as the books,
mainly written by Communist, Liberal and Jewish authors were hurled into the
fire by so called educated people. The monument consists of a 5 metre cube room
that would hold the 20,000 books. It is set below ground level with a glass
window in the ceiling that enables a downward view of the room. It was designed
by Micha Ullman. It was opened on the 20th of March, 1995.
"For this was but a prelude; for when books are burnt, human beings will be
burnt in the end." (1820)
