The UK is a preferred
destination as language and customs present no problems for Australians.
Communication is a major issue when travelling however with the
proliferation of new software and translation devices planned travel to remote places is possible.
We found a fantastic rail system
in the UK. The rail staff were incredibly helpful, the trains well
maintained and the service schedule made for the tourist. Rail was
our number one preferred method of travel. We did not prepurchase
rail tickets in Australia deciding to buy the ticket in the UK when
we arrived. The ticket deals online did not fit into our plan of
staying in places for longer than a few days. We went to the
Cambridge Railway Station Tourist Office and with the aid of their
very helpful staff planned our travel arrangements. The stress
of the process of organising many tickets was completely removed by
the awareness of rail staff. Seniors concessions and booking
as far as possible in advance reduces the cost of rail travel
greatly. The availability of great
accommodation in the centre of each location enhanced our ability to
tap into many tourist sites quickly. So many sites are within
walking distance of each other. We did make the typical tourist
mistake of taking a set tour - "one day" - "three locations" -
"value for money". No, no, no, great locations, fantastic history,
British icons however it was run, run, run, run and run some more.
Be careful, look at the tour you are offered, look at it on a map,
review the distances between places, review the sites on one of the
photographic map sites online, look at the history of the sites. Too
much "value for money" is not a quality tour experience, it ends up
being a bus ride experience.
